The LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art is unique among top MFA programs in the country in its intense focus on painting, as distinct from the cross-disciplinary programs that dominate the field. The Hoffberger School is known for its high level of intellectual discourse, diverse visiting artist roster, and communal yet rigorous critical environment.

Each year 新沙巴体育投注_足球比分直播-平台*网址’s second-year MFA students present an exhibition showcasing their thesis work at campus galleries located in Baltimore. This year we aim to clarify our vision and strengthen our growing participation in contemporary art by presenting our show in New York City during the heart of MFA season.

Hoffberger’s spring 2019 Critic-in-Residence, David Joselit, was one of the first to speak of the liberation of painting from the "death of painting" discourse. The materiality of painting, and how its practitioners connect with it, allows painters to raise questions distinct from those posed by other artists in other mediums. These ideas of Joselit's and related notions are part of an important conversation currently underway in contemporary art, both in academic and gallery settings.

The LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting class of 2020 intends to remain at the forefront of this cultural discussion, which impacts not only the well-being of future painters, but how we as a society view questions of cultural theory and art in practice.
